Announcing... our rebrand!

10.1.15

The two photography companies owned by Kristen Taylor (Kristen Taylor Photography and Kindred by Kristen Taylor) have now combined into one larger company called KRISTEN TAYLOR & CO.

At the core of Kristen Taylor & Co are four stylish, sophisticated, and artistic photographers who truly love to photograph weddings, our talented support crew of Second Photographers and Assistants, and our amazing office and post-production crew. We all have very high standards for every aspect of our lives, and we hold ourselves to those same high standards as we provide wedding photography in our Modern Romance style.

We are more than a one-photographer small business, but we are also not a huge and impersonal machine. Instead we incorporate the best traits of each, and we combine them in a way that still builds a personal connection between each client and their photographer, but which also benefits from the efficiency, experience, and high-quality customer service of a larger and more established company.

While we have four Lead Photographers at present time, we are working to build up to more with the goal of becoming even larger so we can offer even more high-quality choices, like the Nordstrom of wedding photography. If you think you might be a good fit for our team, please see the HIRING page of our website.

What I wish all of my brides knew (but I've never told them)

5.13.15

I was recently asked by The Overwhelmed Bride to write an article on the following topic: What I wish all of my brides knew but I've never told them. I spent some time thinking about what to write on this topic, challenged by the fact that I already share a lot of wedding day pointers with my clients therefore leaving little left to say, but then it came to me clear as day. The following is Part One of my article:

I can't speak for all photographers, but in my 12+ years of photographing weddings, and in my many talks with my numerous wedding photographer friends, I know I am not alone when I say the following: The more that I feel a positive connection with a bride and groom, and genuinely appreciated by them, the better their photos will be.

This isn't intentional, it's totally subconscious, and it can't really be faked. Photography is an art, and art comes from the soul. When my soul is into it, I am much more "on" that day... and that's when more than just good photos happen, that's when the magic happens. That's when I click the shutter at the exact right fraction of a second as the tear drops from the bride's mom's eye, when I immediately put the bride into the exact right degree from the light so that the whole shot has a glow, and when I am able to see and create new and amazing ways to compose the same shots I take every week. Since cameras are very mechanical, and because the technical side of photography involves fractions and math, it might lead some to believe that there is a formula to being a good photographer. There is a formula to being a good camera operator, but the art of photography, the part that matters and makes all of the difference, comes from the soul.

Of course a good, dedicated, and experienced photographer will work just as hard and can still get all of the photos needed in a quality way, even when they aren't feeling very connected to the couple. I have photographed so many weddings that I know exactly where to be to capture the action and the emotion, how to position people to look amazing, when to step in and when to step back, how to use light, background, texture, etc. The things that used to cause me an immense amount of stress when I first started shooting weddings I now do without even thinking because they've become so easy for me. There is definitely something to be said for experience.

However no amount of technical knowledge or experience can compare to the higher level of visual quality, stunning beauty, and heartfelt emotion that is achievable when the photographer is shooting from their soul. It's the difference between admiring a photo for being a really nice shot and being unable to look away from it because you feel mesmerized by it. It's when it's not just pretty, but when it means something. It's when it is clear that the taker of the photo was not just at the wedding, but was actually included as a part of the wedding.

So what establishes a good connection between clients and their photographer? This too doesn't have a formula, and it's not as simple as a list of check boxes. However I have definitely been doing this long enough to identify things that contribute to, or detract from, the relationship. Stay tuned next week for Part Two of this article, in which I will elaborate on the answer to this question.

valerie appreciation day!

2.26.15

Some of you have met Valerie, but in case you have not, Valerie is my super rad, always amazing, totally cool Studio Assistant. I don't know what I would do without her, so I decided that she needed to be appreciated in a BIG way. Yesterday when Valerie came to work, she was shocked and totally surprised by this banner I'd made her which was hanging above her desk. And of course this was not all that I did for her. She also got a hand-written card in which I gushed about her, a Visa gift card, and I took her out to lunch! As thrilled as she was by all of this, I think it made me equally as happy to do it for her!

The official launch of Kindred, a sister company to KTP!

1.31.14

{kin-dred}, adjective. definition: Of a similar quality and character.

After owning my business for eight years, my referral base has grown to the point where I am getting booked up very quickly, and I hate having to turn away any brides! At the same time, many of the photographers who had for years been working with me and getting trained very closely by me, were getting good (really good!). So connecting those two things and launching a sister company was the very logical next step!

And hence, Kindred by Kristen Taylor was born.

Currently Kindred has two photographers, Courtney and Kristin G. (we call her Kristin G. in order to try to reduce confusion between the two Kristen/Kristins). Both of them have already been booking and shooting weddings for me, however they are now officially getting moved over to the new Kindred brand. As others become ready to shoot for Kindred I will be adding more photographers, however I am not in a rush to grow the quantity of photographers, instead I am focusing on the quality of them. Despite having multiple photographers, Kindred is still a boutique-style wedding photography company in which we focus on offering amazing photography in our Modern Romance style, as well as on the client and their photographer having a personal connection with one another. That will not change no matter how large we grow.

Kindred is NOT a factory-style company in which you are shown sample images that were maybe or maybe not (probably not) photographed by the photographer they send to you on your wedding day, usually one that you have never even met, and who may have a very different style and personality than what you were anticipating. In stark contrast, at Kindred YOU select your photographer, you see sample images that were shot by THAT photographer, and you get to meet that photographer IN PERSON prior to booking. Each photographer is very closely and thoroughly trained by me in my Modern Romance style, and they are usually promoted from within after having gained a significant amount of on-the-job experience. All of this provides you with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your wedding photographer's style and personality is exactly what YOU were looking for.

Because I have spent the past eight years selecting the best products and perfecting my operating proceedures, all of the stages of the operational process from booking, pre-planning, post-production, and the design of the final products are done in the exact same way as they are for my own company, and in fact they are done by the exact same people. Although Kindred and Kristen Taylor Photography have separate websites, logos, etc., behind the scenes the two companies are very closely connected. Therefore, not only do you have the assurance that your photographer's style will be similar to mine, but you can be confident that you will receive the same type of high-quality products and excellent customer service that I already have a reputation for providing.

Anyway, below are photos of Courtney and Kristin G., as well as just a few of our favorite images they shot last year (you can find the rest of our 2013 favorites at Kindred website).
